OVERVIEW
Shopping app, a brand new app that will accompany the user shopping at the malls and commercial centers, to help him find the item in the fastest and the most convenient way. This application offers benefits and a shopping experience in the non- virtual world with many advantages of the virtual world.
The main purpose of the project is to help the user save time while shopping and searching and to enable him to enjoy the benefits of virtual shopping in a non-virtual world.
User Research
The Problem
83% of the public goes to a regular mall about 4 times a month, with most (70.5%) staying over an hour in the mall.
The regular mall is close to their residence. Most people who go to the mall spend 4 hours a month looking for items. 72% of the public come to the mall mainly for shopping, and not to pass the time: social gathering, sitting in cafes / restaurants or going to the movies. (Research and Economics Administration Ministry of Industry, Trade and Employment)
In conclusion, people spend a lot of hours in the mall and not sure they will find what they want to buy.
In order to get to know the users I used several types of research tools. Current analytical data among mall buyers, quantitative research - questionnaires, qualitative research - interviews and open questions.
My research encompassed -
-
Identify my target audience
-
Shopping habits
-
Needs
-
Difficulties he faces in shopping at the mall on a daily basis
-
And what would he like to change when he goes to the mall (features)
Qualitative Interviews
The interviews were important to understand the user's pain points and challenges. The interview questions are designed to isolate the areas of pain and the needs of the user, and how they see the app making a difference in optimizing pain areas.
When I go to the mall with my wife and kids, it ends up with a lots of unnecessary items and expenses that we do not need. It's very hard to hang out with kids in the shops, they always want to go somewhere else.
Oren (45 years old, Married, father of 4 and software engineer at Matrix)
I really love going to the mall with my friends, but many times the dress or shoes I want are too expensive and the money my mom gave me is't enough for me and I have to go back with my mom to the store to buy it, hopefully my size won't run out.
Shalev (13 years old, Middle school student and lives in Kiryat Hasharon)
I usually go to the mall while there are sales. Usually when I arrive at the store my size did run out. Also there is a very long queue and cost me parking time and of course the employees in the store will not be available to help me.

Insights
After conducting user interviews, analyzing the results of the questionnaires and presenting them in graphs and percentages, I was able to categorize the insights into these three categories.
-
84% - Women
-
59.1% - Between the ages of 21-47
-
95% - Technologically active
The main areas of pain
-
Spending a lot of time in the mall looking for the item.
-
Long queue and unavailability of employees in the store to help(especially in sales periods)
-
Do not find what they are looking for / not in the budget they have allocated for themselves
-
The size of the item you want is out of stock, so you need to go to another branch of the store or place a new order.
User Profiles
The study sharpened how different users would use the app differently. To meet their needs differently in the app, I classified them into three user profiles based on their goals, needs, pains and tasks.
The adolescent
15 years old | high school student | lives in Ramat Gan
The main pain: a limited budget from parents
The persona’s interest: Experience a less dependent shopping experience
University student
25 years old | Psychology Student at Tel Aviv University | lives in Ramat Gan
The main pain: budget and limited time.
The persona’s interest: Affordable shopping, in the least, a waste of time
The mother
15 years old | high school student | lives in Ramat Gan | Very active on social networks
The main pain: Affordable shopping, in the least, a waste of time
The persona’s interest:
-
A buying experience that includes controlling your purchase expenses
In conclusion
Time = money The main feature of the app should be a feature that will make the user save time and thus manage his time more efficiently in malls
Information Architecture

The solution
The app offers a virtual form of payment in the non-virtual environment. The app will allow payment by scanning the item's barcode and paying by credit card directly from the app.
After the purchase, he will receive an online invoice and barcode on it.
Before leaving the store, there will be a box with a screen where the user will scan the invoice codebar and remove the buzzer.A box will open and the user wil place the buzzer correctly on the buzzer remover (a video will appear on the screen to show how to do it easily).- Complementary product for the app
in the first few weeks there will be a representative who will explain about the buzzer remover process.
The customer will then pick up a bag and leave the store. The invoice is stored in the app with the option to send by email or any other way.
The product will mainly enter large chains and not small stores where the advantage of the app is not significant - large chains like ZARA H&M PRIMARK etc.
Localization
Allows the app to locate the user's location when it activates GPS or alternatively if the user has already activated it independently the app will locate it a few seconds later with a loading screen
Free Search
The user can type and search with no localization.
Homepage
Items related to the user's previous searches will appear in the home screen.
The user has the ability to search for free text or filtered categories with the option to filter by brand color etc.
Main Menu
The user's personal information will appear in the main menu such as "profile", payment details (credit details) will appear - with the option to change, cancel and update credit card information.
In the Notification category will show invoices, promotions and remote payment notifications.
Product Page
The product page displays the item information and opinions. The product page has 2 main functions
1. Continue purchasing
2. Send a request for remote payment (Another user pays for it remotely)
It is also possible to make an online club ticket
Purchase Process
When the user clicks the "Purchase" button, a screen will appear telling him how to properly scan the item's barcode
This screen will appear in the first few times of using the app, then it will disappear as it will interfere with the user experience that already knows how to use the app
On clicking "scan barcode" button the scan screen will apear- the user will need to scan the item barcode.
After scanning the first item, he gets a screen that shows him what he has scanned and an option to scan another item.
Checkout Process
At the end of the process, the user will see a summary of the scanned items with a final payment amount and credit information.
Once the user approves the payment.
He gets a barcode that must be scanned at the exit of the store. When the barcode is scanned, a box will open containing a buzzer removal device.
In front of the stand will be a screen with a video on how to remove the buzzer easily, just like the cashier does. After that just getting a bag and leaving the store.
The invoice appears below the screen with the option to email it. And of course the invoice is kept in the notification.
Remote Purchase
Clicking the "Remote Payment" button will be the same process as scanning the item. After scanning the user will send the request through a preferred app for example :Wattsap and then whoever is paying will see the screen through the browser without having to install the app.
Then if he wants to pay, he will fill out complete credit information after the payment is approved, an app notification will be sent that the payment was made.
But only the app owner's approval will confirm this payment. A further scan of the item's is requested to verify that it has not lost the item during that time and that the item is in his hand.
Usability Testing
-
Building prototypes in Invision and share them with stakeholders- (Young people who are technologically active and interested in shopping) to get early feedback at every milestone of the process.
-
Before launching the final version to the market, we will need to make observation and interviews.users will come (for a fee) to explore the app and the entire process in environment which simulates a real shopto examine the entire process and user experience.
-
Finally come out with the final version that can make a real purchase in stores and get reviews from people who used the app.
Project Learnings
-
Focus on the specific feature that can make your product revolutionary
the feature that allows the user to pay without waiting in line is most important in the app. And this is the strongest feature the app has to offer that meets the needs of all personas. In the end, the main feature is the app.
-
raise as many problems as possible in the early stages
It's important to raise as many problems as possible in the early stages otherwise we get into a circle of problems that are very difficult to get out of
